Titan Quest 2: The Bright and Breezy Action-RPG You’ve Been Waiting For

04/08/2024 Sean Williams 845

Titan Quest 2 is on the horizon, and for those of you tired of the grimdark vibes of Diablo 4, this might just be the breath of fresh air you’ve been craving. Forget convoluted titles and overly complex jargon—Titan Quest 2 delivers exactly what its name promises: a grand adventure steeped in mythology, with all the monster-slaying and loot-collecting you could ask for.

This action-RPG takes you through a vibrant, mythological world, viewed from a top-down perspective, where you’ll be smashing through Ancient Greek creatures like giant crabs, all while hunting for shinier and deadlier gear. And yes, there’s an endgame where you’ll be farming monsters for crafting materials—because what’s an RPG without that sweet grind?

THQ Nordic recently dropped a trailer that walks you through the game’s core features, but if you’re not in the mood to watch, here’s the lowdown. The heart of Titan Quest 2 lies in its Masteries system. Instead of picking a fixed class, you choose two Masteries, which are sets of abilities that can be combined in different ways to create unique playstyles. Whether you’re adding a ground-pound to your attacks or summoning a gust of permafrost, the customization options are vast.

Enemies aren’t just mindless fodder—they come in various factions, each with its own tactics, abilities, and loot. They’ll team up to take you down, pushing you to experiment with your Masteries. Of course, if you prefer a more straightforward approach, there are skills and abilities that let you bulldoze through enemies with brute force. And yes, there are bosses. That mini-dragon you saw in the footage? Can you pet it? Maybe after it’s been thoroughly defeated.

Post-story, the buildcrafting continues. Loot drops come in different rarities, and hunting for that top-tier gear is just as satisfying as rolling credits. There’s also a crafting system that encourages targeted farming for materials, ensuring you’ve got plenty to do even after the main quest.

Fans of the original Titan Quest will likely find a lot to love here, but the game also has appeal for action-RPG players who are turned off by the darker tones of Diablo 4 or even the slightly more colorful Path of Exile. Instead of slogging through hellscapes by the light of a dying torch, you’ll be grinding loot under the warm sun and sparkling waters of the Aegean Sea. The ruins, the waterfalls—it all looks stunning. You can practically smell the sunlight hitting those ancient mosaics.

Even if you’re not typically into loot-driven games, the bright, mythological setting might just draw you in. The real question, though, is whether Titan Quest 2 will resist the temptation to overload itself with live service elements like Diablo 4. For now, you can learn more about the game on Steam and GOG, though there’s no release date just yet. Keep your eyes peeled for this one—it might just be the ARPG you’ve been waiting for.
