If you’ve been keeping track of the Lords of the Fallen saga, buckle up because CI Games has announced that Hexworks is developing yet another Lords of the Fallen game, which is a sequel to 2023’s Lords of the Fallen (itself a sequel to 2014’s Lords of the Fallen). Confused yet? So are we! Slated for release in 2026, the upcoming title is currently code-named Project 3, though I wouldn't be surprised if it just ends up being called, you guessed it, Lords of the Fallen. Maybe in a few years, we’ll be ranking the Lords of the Fallen games in a listicle titled, “Lords of the Fallen Games Ranked—All Two of Them.”
Project 3 will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and promises to deliver gameplay improvements like "increased game mode optionality," a more commercially appealing art style, and better production values, which sounds like a fancier way of saying we’ll get more game modes, prettier visuals, and maybe some catchier UI designs. It’ll also feature a single-player campaign with full co-op progression, and an official announcement is expected in 2025. Oh, and Epic Games has snatched the PC version as an exclusive for the Epic Games Store, so cue the sad trombone for Steam loyalists.
While Lords of the Fallen didn’t light up the world as much as it hoped, CI Games is still banking big on the franchise, calling it one of their “two major evergreen franchises.” The 2023 installment accounted for 72% of CI’s revenue in the first half of 2024, so it’s clear the Soulslike series still has some steam. RPS’s own Lords of the Fallen reviewer wasn’t totally sold, calling it "a game that gets on your nerves," but hey, at least it was rated higher than the original, which was described as “so average it doesn’t even want you to play.”
The other major franchise CI Games is pushing is Sniper Ghost Warrior, and fans of the tactical sniper series can look forward to a new installment in 2027. The next Sniper Ghost Warrior will also run on Unreal Engine 5 and promises to blend survival mechanics with the franchise’s signature sniping gameplay. Development is being fast-tracked thanks to the reuse of assets from other projects, like Project Survive (a new survival IP) and SGW Next. It sounds like CI is trying to streamline things, which might help them hit their ambitious timeline.
CI also has something fresh in the works—a brand-new action-RPG from Underdog Studio. This untitled project will borrow systems from the latest Lords of the Fallen and is expected to go into production in late 2025. Aiming for a 2028 release, the new action-RPG is still in the pre-production phase, but CI is planning to use “cross-studio talent allocation” to get it moving once Hexworks wraps up work on Project 3.
It’s clear that CI Games is doubling down on their core franchises while branching out with some new ideas. Whether it’s another round of cursed Soulslike adventures or lining up the perfect shot in Sniper Ghost Warrior, the studio has some big plans for the next few years. Time will tell if they can hit the mark.
