If you’re a fan of open-world Star Wars games and the Uncharted-like mechanics Ubisoft is known for, Star Wars Outlaws might already be on your radar. But brace yourself, because Ubisoft just dropped some news that might make you either more hyped or a bit wary—depending on how you feel about season passes.
Star Wars Outlaws is launching on August 30th, and Ubisoft has revealed its post-launch DLC plans. These include two story-driven expansions featuring some fan-favorite characters: Lando Calrissian, the charming gambler, and Hondo Ohnaka, the wily pirate. However, there's a catch—these DLCs are tied to a season pass, which is currently only available with certain special editions of the game.
The first DLC, titled "Wild Card," is set to release in Fall 2024. It throws players into a "high-stakes Sabacc tournament," where you’ll cross paths with Lando Calrissian. Expect plenty of gambling intrigue and classic Star Wars flair.
The second DLC, "A Pirate's Fortune," is slated for Spring 2025. In this expansion, you’ll meet Hondo Ohnaka, who’s on a mission to settle old scores with a ruthless gang of pirates.
Now, here’s the kicker. These DLCs aren’t just a simple add-on you can buy later—they’re locked behind the game's special editions. To access them, you'll need to shell out for either the Gold Edition (£95) or the Ultimate Edition (£115). The base game itself is priced at £60, so these editions come with a hefty premium.
As of now, Ubisoft hasn’t made the season pass available for separate purchase, which means you’re stuck paying for a more expensive edition if you want the full Outlaws experience. Alternatively, you can subscribe to Ubisoft+ for £15 a month, which will also grant you access to the DLCs.
Opinions are mixed on whether this pricing model is justified. Some players might see value in the extra content and are eager to dive deeper into the Star Wars universe. Others, however, may feel frustrated by the high cost, especially when the base game itself is already a significant investment.
Edwin Evans-Thirlwell, who tried out Star Wars Outlaws at this year’s gaming showcase, described the game as feeling “about as Han Solo-ish as an Ubisoft open world game.” He noted that while the mechanics might feel familiar and perhaps a bit bland, they’re serviceable enough to deliver the Star Wars experience that many fans are craving.
If you’re a Star Wars die-hard or someone who hasn’t touched an Ubisoft game in a while, Star Wars Outlaws might be worth the investment, even with the pricey DLCs. But if the idea of paying extra for additional content leaves a sour taste in your mouth, you might want to wait and see if Ubisoft eventually offers the season pass separately.
