Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown’s Mask of Darkness DLC is Out Now – A New Chapter Awaits

20/09/2024 Joe Miller 288

It might be a bold claim, but Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown could easily be Ubisoft’s best game of the year, edging out bigger titles like Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This side-scrolling Metroidvania has taken the genre—typically dominated by indie studios—and transformed it into something expansive, rich, and surprisingly challenging. It's the kind of game you wish major publishers would make more often.

Now, The Lost Crown just got even better with the release of its new story expansion, Mask of Darkness, which dropped yesterday.

This DLC adds a brand-new chapter, accessible during the late stages of the game. In Mask of Darkness, Sargon, the protagonist, finds himself trapped in the mind palace of Radjen, one of the Immortals from the original game. Radjen was the only character from the group whose storyline wasn’t fully resolved in the main game—so her reappearance in this expansion seemed almost inevitable.

Since Mask of Darkness is a late-game expansion, Ubisoft assumes you’ve already unlocked all of Prince Sargon’s powers and have a good grasp on the game’s challenging jumps, dashes, and blocks. Before jumping in, they even suggest that players refresh their skills with The Divine Trials, a set of 22 expert-level challenges added in a free update back in June.

Fair warning: The Divine Trials are notoriously tough, so expect a challenge if you use them as a warm-up. That said, the DLC might not be quite as brutal overall—except, of course, for the boss fight that we all know is coming. Either way, The Lost Crown is one of those rare games that leaves you wanting more when you reach the end, making me the perfect candidate for a DLC expansion. So, bring on the thumb-breaking platforming and combat!

Mask of Darkness is available for £4.29/€5/$5 through Ubisoft Connect, the Epic Games Store, and Steam, where The Lost Crown has been available since August. Whether you’re a seasoned Metroidvania fan or just looking for more Prince of Persia, this DLC looks like a worthy addition to your journey.
