How to Beat Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring
Ready to face one of Elden Ring's toughest challenges? Mohg, Lord of Blood, is not only one of the final bosses most Tarnished will encounter, but he’s also a gatekeeper for the highly anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. If you’re looking to take down this bloodthirsty behemoth and prove your mettle, here’s everything you need to know.
You’ll find Mohg in the depths of Mohgwyn Palace. There are two ways to get there: by progressing through White Mask Varré's questline or using the teleporter at the Consecrated Snowfield. The former route can get you to Mohgwyn Palace quicker—potentially before hitting level 100—while the latter is more level-appropriate. For details on both methods, check out our guide on how to reach Mohgwyn Palace. Once inside, navigate through the pools of blood, head towards the central palace mausoleum, and ascend to find Mohg waiting for you at the top.
Mohg has two distinct phases. During the first, he’s relatively slow-moving. This is your time to strike, but be cautious of his spear attacks and Bloodflame Talons, which leave lingering claw marks in the air. Watch out for the Bloodflame on the ground—it causes Blood Loss buildup, which can quickly drain your health in this drawn-out battle.
As the fight progresses, Mohg will initiate a Ritual Countdown, marking your Tarnished’s head with circular red sigils while counting down from three in Latin: “Tres,” “Duo,” “Unus.” As he does this, keep moving to avoid his massive spear strike, and try to break his Poise with heavy attacks from behind.
When Mohg's health drops to around 50%, he’ll trigger the Bloodboon Ritual by shouting “Nihil,” dealing unavoidable damage and healing himself. He’ll do this three times, and without proper preparation, this move can wipe out most builds.
To counter the deadly “Nihil” attack, mix a Purifying Crystal Tear into your Flask of Wondrous Physick before the battle. This item prevents Blood Loss when Mohg triggers his Bloodboon Ritual. While it won’t stop Mohg from healing, it will give you a crucial edge in surviving his onslaught.
To get the Purifying Crystal Tear, you’ll need to progress through Bloody Finger Hunter Yura’s questline. Meet Yura at the Second Church of Marika on Altus Plateau and help him defeat Bloody Finger Eleonora. If you’re not caught up on the quest, refer to our Yura quest guide for all the steps.
If you don’t have the Purifying Crystal Tear, your next best option is to chug Crimson Tears between Nihil’s three casts. Make sure your Flask of Crimson Tears is upgraded to at least +12, and that you have the maximum 14 charges by collecting Golden Seeds. This method is less elegant but effective if you time your healing correctly.
In Mohg’s second phase, he grows wings and becomes far more mobile. His attacks become faster and more dangerous, and the arena fills with Bloodflame patches. Stick close to him, keep up the pressure with heavy attacks, and consider disabling lock-on if the camera view makes it difficult to avoid the flames.
Mohg’s Shackle, similar to Margit’s Shackle, can be used to immobilize him during the first phase, allowing you to land some free critical hits. You can find Mohg’s Shackle in the Subterranean Shunning Grounds, under a pipe in the far southeast of the room. This tool won’t help in the second phase, but any free damage in the first phase is a bonus.
Congratulations! If you’ve managed to defeat Mohg, you’ll be rewarded with:
Mohg’s Great Rune
Remembrance of the Blood Lord
420,000 Runes
After the battle, you can activate the Cocoon of the Empyrean Site of Grace. If you’ve also defeated Starscourge Radahn, you’re ready to dive into the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Just touch the withered arm poking out of the cocoon on Mohg’s throne to be transported to the Land of Shadow.
Now, go forth and conquer the Lands Between, Tarnished!
