Get ready to clear some serious storage space if you’re planning to dive into God of War Ragnarok on PC. Sony’s latest system requirements reveal that the game demands a whopping 190GB of storage, and it’s not just for the epic battles or the sweeping story—it's also for what might just be the best snow in gaming.
The God of War series has always been a visual treat, but for me, the snow in this duology stands out as a true highlight. Sure, there’s plenty more to the game—like, say, 60% of everything else—but the way the snow interacts with the world is simply mesmerizing. In God of War Ragnarok, the action kicks off during the apocalyptic fimbulwinter, which might spell doom for some characters, but for us, it means there’s a whole lot of snow to trudge through.
But just how much snow are we talking about? Well, 190GB worth, to be exact. This hefty storage requirement includes the roguelike Valhalla DLC, which comes bundled with the game when it releases on Steam and the Epic Games Store on September 19th. While the storage demands might make you wince, the rest of the system requirements are relatively standard for a modern AAA title, so at least your CPU and GPU won’t feel as strained as your SSD.
If you’re wondering how this stacks up against other games, here’s a bit of perspective: God of War Ragnarok requires 50GB more space than Baldur's Gate 3, and a full 40GB more than Horizon Forbidden West with all its extras. To put it in even more absurd terms, it’s the equivalent of 13 copies of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or 950 installations of Mini Motorways. So yeah, it’s a big game.
As someone who’s eager to dive back into this frosty world, I might just have to wrangle a review once the game’s out. One thing I can already say is that I’m fully on board with Sony’s trend of including additional challenge modes in their first-party titles. The Last of Us Part 2, Days Gone, and now God of War Ragnarok all feature extra modes that let you focus on the combat, decoupled from the lengthy story segments. This is a welcome addition for a few reasons.
For one, it allows players to revisit and replay specific sequences that they particularly enjoyed without having to wade through the narrative all over again. It also harkens back to a time when these modes were more common, like in Shadow of Rome, Capcom’s ultra-gory gladiator game that eventually led to the Dead Rising series. These extra modes add replayability and make the overall package even more generous—assuming you’ve got the SSD space to accommodate it all, and, of course, a PSN account.
So, if you’re ready to tackle God of War Ragnarok on PC, start clearing out your digital shelves now. You’re going to need all the space you can get.
